Wear it Pink...And Make Them Think!

You wear it well…..although in some instances that could perhaps be rather debatable!!

The charity, Breast Cancer Now, provided the glorious opportunity for MSPs to demonstrate their wild side.

And boy, they weren’t slow to take full advantage of ditching their normal staid image for something more in keeping with the Rocky Horror Show!

It used to be all about painting the town red….but in the case of the latest campaign by Breast Cancer it has now switched to pink.

Behind the fun and frivolity, however, lies a serious message that more than 5,300 people in Scotland are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

The disease remains one of the leading causes of death in women under 50, while secondary breast cancer is responsible for most of these deaths.

Nearly 80 per cent of women in Dumfries and Galloway attended breast screening when invited – higher than the Scotland average.

Research shows also that women who don’t attend their first invite are less likely to do so in the future.

In 2023, just under 70 per cent of women attended breast screening from the most deprived area in Dumfries and Galloway compared with 86 per cent from the least deprived area.

Encouragingly, 100 per cent of people diagnosed with breast cancer started their treatment in 62 days, higher than the Scotland performance and higher than the operational standard.

Meanwhile 100 per cent diagnosed with breast cancer started their treatment in 31 days, again higher than the national figure.

Innovative new treatments are on the horizon, many with the potential to improve the treatment of incurable secondary breast cancer.

Targeted treatments, such as capivasertib and elacestrant, which are both going through the Scottish Medicines Consortium process, can treat secondary breast cancers with certain gene alterations, offering hope of improved quality of life for patients with the incurable disease.
