Finlay at Kirkcudbright Bridge

Local constituency MSP Finlay Carson is seeking Scottish Government intervention regarding the sudden closure of the Kirkcudbright Bridge due to concerns over its structural integrity.

He had hoped to raise the issue during First Minister’s Questions at Holyrood this week.

Now the Galloway and West Dumfries has written to John Swinney asking him to commit to provide urgent assistance to Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP is also hoping that the First Minister will explore options for financial support to reinstate the vehicular crossing as soon as possible.

In his letter, Mr Carson wrote: “You may be aware of the recent emergency closure of Kirkcudbright Bridge.

“The bridge, which has been in place for almost a century, connects the town straddling the River Dee.

“It was closed to vehicles on March 21st following an inspection by structural engineers.”

The MSP revealed the closure has forced drivers to make significant detours, impacting daily commutes and local businesses.

He said also: “The closure has also affected emergency services, potentially causing delays in response times. While the bridge remains open to pedestrians and cyclists, the disruption to vehicular traffic is considerable.

“Given the critical role this iconic bridge plays in our community, will the First Minister commit to provide urgent assistance to Dumfries and Galloway Council including exploring options for financial support to reinstate the vehicular crossing as soon as possible?

“Due to the urgency of the situation, a swift response will be much appreciated.”
