Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson was delighted to visit Kirkcowan Primary to assist in lessons highlighting the importance of lung health.
The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP was alongside Professor John Lockhart, from the University of the West of Scotland, to raise awareness of COPD with pupils at the school.
Professor Lockhart is leading the Border and REgions Airways Training Hub (BREATH) project which will research and tackle Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, levels of which in Stranraer and the surrounding area are among the highest in the world.
Mr Carson took part in a fun experiment in which pupils discovered that lung function was better than in politicians when compared with scientists!
Commenting Finlay Carson MSP said: “This was a welcome opportunity to meet with Professor John Lockhart, to learn how his BREATH project is progressing, as well as highlighting COPD.
“With some of the highest rates of COPD occurring in this area, it is absolutely vital that we continue this research and look into the possibility of a centre of excellence for COPD research in Stranraer, a project I am firmly supportive of.
“It is also important that we educate our youngsters about healthy lungs and the mitigating measures they can take and it was great to see them so interested in learning from Professor Lockhart.
“I will be continuing to explore ways to support this project, which could bring great benefits to the region.”
