Carson demands urgent inquiry into super school

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has demanded an immediate inquiry into serious incidents that have occurred at the North West Community Campus.

The new super school in Dumfries has was beset with problems even before it opened 3 weeks ago, with Mr Carson initially raising concerns on a visit recently.

Now he has written to council bosses demanding that they carry out a full inquiry into issues at the school, which is set to be closed for the second time on Monday after claims that another pupil was injured, this time by a falling electronic white board.

Mr Carson says it is totally unacceptable that pupils and staff have been put at risk and wants the council to give an urgent update on the safety of the heralded new campus.

Commenting Finlay Carson MSP said: “This incident today is yet another worrying development at the Northwest Community Campus, which will be of great concern to parents, staff and pupils alike. We should be able to send our children to school each morning without the fear that they may be injured.”

“While action has been taken to close the school on Monday, an immediate and urgent inquiry must be carried out by the council to root out all the design and building flaws that are clearly apparent within this building.

“It is absolutely unacceptable that pupils and staff have been put at risk in what should be the safest of environments.

“What is of added concern is that Mr Grant gave assurances that ‘we've probably done far greater levels of checks now than you might normally have done.’

“It also raises the question of who issued a completion certificate and determined that the building was safe."
