Galloway and West Dumfries MSP, Finlay Carson, has met with Alex Hynes, Managing Director of ScotRail Alliance.
The local MSP discussed the possibility of relocating Stranraer’s train station much closer to the town and away from its current location on the East Pier.
The station’s current location is an eyesore to local residents and unwelcoming to visitors to the area.
Mr Hynes confirmed, during his meeting with Carson, that there may be funding available to relocate the current station.
Commenting, Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson said:
“I welcome Alex Hynes commitment to explore a new Stranraer town station.
“I am looking to facilitate a meeting between Dumfries and Galloway Council, StenaLine, and ScotRail Alliance to look into this matter further.
“A town station in Stranraer would allow easier access to the many facilities that the town has to offer and potentially increase visitor to the town via the rail network.
“Currently rail passengers disembark into an area of what could be described as wasteland, not the first impression of Stranraer that we would want.
“A Stranraer town station could potentially provide a much needed boost to the local economy and I am sure be welcomed by many commuters who currently have to walk a considerable distance to the East Pier to catch a train.”
