Galloway & West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has called for further clarity over proposals to close police stations in his constituency of Galloway and West Dumfries.
Police Scotland has recommended closing the Whithorn police station and moving both Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie to the fire stations in these towns. Under the recommendations Dalry would be retained.
Commenting, Finlay said:
“I am deeply concerned by the proposals to close the Whithorn Police Station and the scaling back of provisions in Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie. These are vital resources to the local communities and their removal will be a major blow for local residents.
“The only way to have effective community policing is to have officers working in and with local communities. When we know that attending a Police Station is still peoples preferred way of reporting a crime, the removal or reduced resources of police stations could have a terrible impact on the communities that rely on the local police force to keep us safe.
“The record of this SNP Government on policing has been horrendous. I would urge the SNP to have a serious rethink of this further erosion of Scotland’s police. I will be writing to the Chief Constable of Police Scotland and the Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Michael Matheson, seeking urgent clarity over the security of the police force in Dumfries & Galloway.”
